Chuck-a-wha?

This past weekend was set to have good weather so we took advantage to check out more of the Pacifiic Northwest. On Scott M's recommendation, we headed north toward Bellingham and Chuckanut Drive. Chuckanut drive is not only fun to say, but is supposedly one of the most scenic streets in Washington. Pretty tall order to fill, isn't it?

We headed north on I5 until we hit Bellingham where we stopped for some lunch. Friends and colleagues have said this is a cute little town, and the old Fairhaven district is indeed very nice. There is a small shopping/eating area and a nice waterfront trail that we walked along. The path takes you out onto a pier over the water, and this one beats the Juanita one any day becuase I did not see one spider web while on the pier.

After lunch and our walk, we drove south on Chuckanut Drive. The road was first built in 1896 and there are some areas of the drive that hug the cliffs of Chuckanut mountain and is still very narrow. The drive winds through the mountain, with lovely views of the San Juan Islands, and then meanders farmland before connecting back to I5. It's pretty since it takes you through different types of scenery.
